Working out with another person may be just what you need to keep yourself going. Your other options—working out alone, with a trainer, in a structured class, or with a big group—might not be conducive to your success. For example, to work out alone and be successful, you must be totally self-motivated. To work out with a trainer or in a class, you need the requisite budget. A group may not suit your style, your time constraints or your personality. Here are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a regular workout partner:

• Remember your
primary goal is to work out. Sometimes your best friend isn't the best choice, since you may end up talking more than exercising.

• You and your workout partner should, above all,
push each other.

• If you are walking, jogging, rowing, biking, cross-country skiing, or performing any activity where you’re "traveling” outside, it is important that your partner be about the
same ability level as you. Otherwise, you will be working out by yourself!

• Keep in mind that
the time you select to work out should be the best time for both of you so you can meet your responsibility to the other.

Choose someone reliable—you want your partner to be the type of person who will not want to let you down by not showing up.

• Both you and your workout partner
should live or work close to the workout site—proximity limits excuses.

• The
best joint activities I've found are walking, jogging, aerobic dance, and biking. If you decide to bike, don’t forget your helmet, and be sure to select a route that is fun as well as safe.
